In this book, Mill expounds his concept of individual freedom within the context of his ideas on history and the state. On Liberty depends on the idea that society progresses from lower to higher stages and that this progress culminates in the emergence of a system of representative democracy. It is within the context of this form of government that Mill envisions the growth and development of liberty.
Published in , it applies Mill's ethical system of utilitarianism to society and state. He emphasizes the importance of individuality , which he considers prerequisite to the higher pleasures—the summum bonum of utilitarianism. Furthermore, Mill asserts that democratic ideals may result in the tyranny of the majority. Among the standards proposed are Mill's three basic liberties of individuals, his three legitimate objections to government intervention, and his two maxims regarding the relationship of the individual to society. On Liberty was a greatly influential and well-received work.
This collection of essays, written by some of the most distinguished scholars working in Mill studies today, represents a highly original and extremely important re-evaluation of Mill's career. By exposing and exploring Mill's intellectual debt to the Socratic tradition, it will have a profound and lasting impact on future interpretations of Mill's thought, and on our understanding of utilitarian philosophy more generally. This stimulating collection of original essays reminds modern readers just how deeply Mill's debts to Socratic 'elenchus' were intertwined with his liberal utilitarian normative commitments. "On Liberty" and Other Essays by John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill is one of the hallowed figures of the liberal tradition, revered for his defense of liberal principles and expansive personal liberty. By examining Mill's arguments in On Liberty in light of his other writings, however, Joseph Hamburger reveals a Mill very different from the "saint of rationalism" so central to liberal thought. He shows that Mill, far from being an advocate of a maximum degree of liberty, was an advocate of liberty and control--indeed a degree of control ultimately incompatible with liberal ideals. Hamburger offers this powerful challenge to conventional scholarship by presenting Mill's views on liberty in the context of his ideas about, in particular, religion and historical development.
Mill maintains that the individual has absolute right over his independence and that freedom to express this independence must be protected. It is in this sense that liberty is used throughout this essay. This essay proceeds from the assumption that Gray has reconciled the oft-alleged contradiction between utility and liberty in On Liberty .

John Stuart Mill —73 was the most influential English language philosopher of the nineteenth century. He was a naturalist, a utilitarian, and a liberal, whose work explores the consequences of a thoroughgoing empiricist outlook. In doing so, he sought to combine the best of eighteenth-century Enlightenment thinking with newly emerging currents of nineteenth-century Romantic and historical philosophy. James Mill, a Scotsman, had been educated at Edinburgh University—taught by, amongst others, Dugald Stewart—and had moved to London in , where he was to become a friend and prominent ally of Jeremy Bentham and the Philosophical Radicals. For this, at least, it prepared him well. Starting with Greek at age three and Latin at age eight, Mill had absorbed most of the classical canon by age twelve—along with algebra, Euclid, and the major Scottish and English historians. In his early teenage years, he studied political economy, logic, and calculus, utilising his spare time to digest treatises on experimental science as an amusement.
