Different mineral admixtures in concrete: a review

Mineral admixtures and chemical admixtures are the extra ingredients other than water, cement, aggregates and fibers. These are added to the concrete batch plant during batch mixing or at the start when other quantities are added. Admixtures offer very favorable effects to the properties of fresh or hardened concrete only if proper use of admixtures is made possible. Admixtures improve the quality of concrete, accelerate setting time, and decelerate setting time in case of any misshaping. Now there is a wide range of admixtures available in the market that enhanced resistance against freeze and thaw effect. It made possible of earlier attainment of strength. Admixtures enhanced the workability of fresh concrete with lesser amount of water than the required one.

The basic components of cement mortar are cement, water and aggregates. But, often, other substances are added to these three in preparing the cement mortar. The purpose of these additional substances is to improve the quality of the mortar. These substances are collectively called admixtures. Admixtures can be broadly classified into two types — chemical admixtures and mineral admixtures. Mineral admixtures are basically derived from other substances and not chemically manufactured. Fly ash, blast furnace slag, silica fume are popular examples of mineral admixtures.

Different mineral admixtures in concrete: a review

The paper presented herein investigates the effects of using supplementary cementitious materials in binary, ternary, and quaternary blends on the fresh and hardened properties of self-compacting concretes SCCs. The control mixture contained only portland cement PC as the binder while the remaining mixtures incorporated binary, ternary, and quaternary cementitious blends of PC, fly ash FA , ground granulated blast furnace slag GGBFS , and silica fume SF. After mixing, the fresh properties of the concretes were tested for slump flow time, L-box height ratio, V-funnel flow time, setting time, and viscosity. Moreover, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and electrical resistivity of the hardened concretes were measured. Test results have revealed that incorporating the mineral admixtures improved the fresh properties and rheology of the concrete mixtures. The compressive strength and electrical resistivity of the concretes with SF and GGBFS were much higher than those of the control concrete.

Effects Of Mineral Admixture On Concrete

Retarding admixtures , which slow the setting rate of concrete, are used to counteract the accelerating effect of hot weather on concrete setting. High temperatures often cause an increased rate of hardening which makes placing and finishing difficult. Retarders keep concrete workable during placement and delay the initial set of concrete. Most retarders also function as water reducers and may entrain some air in concrete.

The present work reviews the various mineral admixtures used in concrete which modifies the concrete properties. In this study, cement is partially or completely replaced by different mineral admixtures such as fly ash, silica fume, rice husk ash, Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag, palm oil fuel ash and metakaolin. The strength obtained is different for different mineral admixtures by adding these to concrete. Various concrete characteristics like split tensile, compressive and flexural strength, durability, workability are presented.
