The use of wireless technologies for critical surveillance and home automation introduces a number of opportunities as well as technological challenges. New emerging technologies give the opportunity to exploit the full potential of the internet of things paradigm by augmenting existing wired installations with smart wireless architectures. This work gives an overview of requirements, characteristics, and challenges of wireless home automation networks with special focus on intrusion detection systems. The proposed wireless network is based on several sensors that are deployed over a monitored area for detecting possible risky situations and triggering appropriate actions in response. The network needs to support critical traffic patterns with different characteristics and quality constraints. Namely, it should provide a periodic low-power monitoring service and, in case of intrusion detection, a real-time alarm propagation mechanism over inherently unreliable wireless links subject to fluctuations of the signal power. Following the guidelines introduced by recent standardization, this paper proposes the design of a wireless network prototype at MHz which is able to satisfy the specifications of typical intrusion detection applications.

Things have evolved due to the convergence of multiple technologies, real-time analytics , machine learning , commodity sensors , and embedded systems. In the consumer market, IoT technology is most synonymous with products pertaining to the concept of the " smart home ", including devices and appliances such as lighting fixtures, thermostats , home security systems and cameras, and other home appliances that support one or more common ecosystems, and can be controlled via devices associated with that ecosystem, such as smartphones and smart speakers. IoT can also be used in healthcare systems. There are a number of serious concerns about dangers in the growth of IoT, especially in the areas of privacy and security , and consequently industry and governmental moves to address these concerns have begun including the development of international standards. The main concept of a network of smart devices was discussed as early as , with a modified Coca-Cola vending machine at Carnegie Mellon University becoming the first Internet-connected appliance,  able to report its inventory and whether newly loaded drinks were cold or not. In recent times, home automation is preferred to be an important addenda in modern homes for several purposes like safety, security etc.
Smart home systems achieved great popularity in the last decades as they increase the comfort and quality of life. Most smart home systems are controlled by smartphones and microcontrollers. A smartphone application is used to control and monitor home functions using wireless communication techniques. We explore the concept of smart home with the integration of IoT services and cloud computing to it, by embedding intelligence into sensors and actuators, networking of smart things using the corresponding technology, facilitating interactions with smart things using cloud computing for easy access in different locations, increasing computation power, storage space and improving data exchange efficiency. In this chapter we present a composition of three components to build a robust approach of an advanced smart home concept and implementation.
The use of the Internet is growing in this day and age, so another area has developed to use the Internet, called Internet of Things IoT. It facilitates the machines and objects to communicate, compute and coordinate with each other. It is an enabler for the intelligence affixed to several essential features of the modern world, such as homes, hospitals, buildings, transports and cities. The security and privacy are some of the critical issues related to the wide application of IoT. Therefore, these issues prevent the wide adoption of the IoT. In this paper, we are presenting an overview about different layered architectures of IoT and attacks regarding security from the perspective of layers. In addition, a review of mechanisms that provide solutions to these issues is presented with their limitations.
