This topic builds on those of Chapters 2 and 3, as their themes of the scope for choice in politics and the necessity for coercion influence the role that morality can play in state action and the role it should play. Important here are such issues as the degree to which moral norms ought to play a part in political decision-making, and whether these norms are the same as those of personal morality.

Moral Man and Immoral Society: A Study in Ethics and Politics

The ethics of a society is embedded in the ideas and beliefs about what is right or wrong, what is a good or bad character; it is also embedded in the conceptions of satisfactory social relations and attitudes held by the members of the society; it is embedded, furthermore, in the forms or patterns of behavior that are considered by the members of the society to bring about social harmony and cooperative living, justice, and fairness. The ideas and beliefs about moral conduct are articulated, analyzed, and interpreted by the moral thinkers of the society. African societies, as organized and functioning human communities, have undoubtedly evolved ethical systems—ethical values, principles, rules—intended to guide social and moral behavior. But, like African philosophy itself, the ideas and beliefs of the African society that bear on ethical conduct have not been given elaborate investigation and clarification and, thus, stand in real need of profound and extensive analysis and interpretation. In the last three decades or so, attempts have been made by contemporary African philosophers to give sustained reflective attention to African moral ideas.

Reinhold Niebuhr was one of America's foremost twentieth-century religious thinkers and social critics. As pastor of Bethel Evangelical Church in Detroit, he became deeply interested in social problems. Ultimately, he abandoned his liberal Protestant hopes for the church's moral rule of society and became a Socialist activist.

Arguably his most famous book, Moral Man and Immoral Society is Reinhold Niebuhr's important early study in ethics and politics. Widely read and continually relevant, this book marked Niebuhr's decisive break from progressive religion and politics toward a more deeply tragic view of human nature and history. Forthright and realistic, Moral Man and Immoral Society argues that individual morality is intrinsically incompatible with collective life, thus making social and political conflict inevitable. Niebuhr further discusses our inability to imagine the realities of collective power; the brutal behavior of human collectives of every sort; and, ultimately, how individual morality can mitigate the persistence of social immorality. This new edition includes a foreword by Cornel West that explores the continued interest in Niebuhr's thought and its contemporary relevance.

Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics

How are we to behave toward one another? Morality is a social phenomenon. Think about this. If a person is alone on some deserted island would anything that person did be moral or immoral? That person may do things that increase or decrease the chance for survival or rescue but would those acts be moral or immoral? Most of what we are concerned with in Ethics is related to the situation in which humans are living with others.

Christianity is, at first glance, not a religion optimally suited to guide foreign policy. With its doctrines of universal love, humility, and turning the other cheek, Christian thinkers since at least Augustine have struggled to reconcile their moral vision with the reality of international life. In this book and others like The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness , Niebuhr played an invaluable role during the tumultuous s and s by bringing Christians to terms with participation in the Second World War and later the Cold War. The Christian doctrine of sinfulness and the Fall meant, according to Niebuhr, the ever-present possibility of evil, which was all too evident in spreading fascist and communist doctrines. Moral action did not imply passivity in the face of sin, nor were leaders of communities bound by the same moral constraints as individuals. Though now primarily remembered for its tough-mindedness, Niebuhr's book bears rereading to remind us that a realistic morality is not the same thing as amoral realism, that power, even in the service of justice, must recognize its own limitations, and that democracies were capable of their own kind of hubris.

Often, I'll hear people refer to their moral compass or moral code. And sometimes, I'll hear people discuss how "others" don't have either a moral compass or code. Then, those people will say the "others" are immoral or amoral. Empathy vs.

Perhaps most important, they demonstrate that his insights can speak productively to contemporary issues whose urgency he may not have recognized.
