LU HSUN , chief commander of China's modern cultural revolution, was not only a great thinker and political commentator but the founder of modern Chinese literature.

Although some locations and characters cross over from one story to another, each story's plot is unique. What these stories do have in common is that they all take place in China in the early twentieth century and reflect Chinese culture and the norms of the day. The various plots show the relationships between various characters and how they deal with daily struggles and the politics of the day.

A Madman's Diary

Two brothers, whose names I need not mention here, were both good friends of mine in high school; but after a separation of many years we gradually lost touch. One of the semi-autobiographical stories in the book, this tells of a trip by the young Lu Xun to watch a Chinese opera in the evening. The writing was most confused and incoherent, and he had made many wild statements; moreover he had omitted to give any dates, so that only by the colour of the ink and the differences in the writing could one tell that it was not written at one time.
