A personal account of Gregory Bateson and the turning over of the generations, carrying some of Bateson's way of thinking forward to the time and beyond. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Bateson attributed the ecological peril to bad thinking and suggested that the author needs better thinking, including what the author can learn from the syncretic practice of art. To operate in the realm of play — music, poetry, myth, and so on — in the context of hearing your children talk about Malthusian events and mass extinctions is perhaps a way of fiddling while Rome burns. But possibly, this is itself the practice — a way to begin to master the new kinds of thinking that the author needs to learn to do.

Gregory Bateson was one of the most original thinkers of the late twentieth century. His research covered a vast array of different fields: anthropology, biology, psychology, and philosophy of science. He would often move himself across the boundaries of disciplines, and do so in highly innovative ways. Until now his work has been largely inaccessible to those outside of the academic community.

We acknowledge the generosity of M. Bateson for the permission to publish in this site two chapters of Mind and Nature by G. The work and thought leading to this book have spread over many years, and my debts go back to include all that were acknowledged in the preface to my previous book, Steps to an Ecology of Mind. But I have tried to write to be understandable to those who have not read Steps and therefore shall acknowledge here only debts contracted since Steps was published. Even so, recent favors have been many. And then I have to thank the Lindisfarne Association, whose scholar in residence I was for six months of the writing of this book.

Furthermore, we will approach the epistemological implications of ecology of mind for scientific education in the West. This led him to search for patterns of similarity and difference between organisms like in homology. Later, he identified this thought process as being abstract and formal, relating not just facts but also ideas. Afterwards, Bateson developed criteria for us to consider a system as being mental, with special emphasis on living and cybernetic systems.
