Samuel C Rajiv replies : India has consistently urged Israel to engage in negotiations with the Palestinians to resolve outstanding issues and work towards the establishment of a Palestinian state, based on mutual recognition and effective security arrangements. As for East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state, India has stated that this has to be decided in final status negotiations between two parties.

Before its creation, the Jewish were living in Palestine as refugee and later formed the State of Israel with the help of Britain and the United States of America. These created an alarm among the Arabs for losing their land to the Jewish.

The two countries have an extensive economic, military, and strategic relationship. Israel is represented through an embassy in New Delhi , and one consulate each in Mumbai and Bengaluru. India is represented through its embassy in Tel Aviv.

India, Israel, and the United States in post cold war world order

Why do some bilateral relationships have the ability to become strong, stable and amicable but others do not even when they have incentive to develop higher resilience? This article proposes that perceived relational identity differences between two states, or otherness, shapes and limits resilience in their relationship. Drawing on the existing IR identity literature, the article develops a conceptual and operational definition of otherness and proposes a useful and replicable framework that can be used to capture the complexity of bilateral ties. The article illustrates this framework with two types of cases. Second, a most likely contemporary mini-case India—Israel — , which uncovers lower than expected resilience. The article then concludes with the implications of this framework for further academic research and policy analysis.

India's foreign policy toward Israel is a subject of deep dispute. Throughout the twentieth century arguments have raged over the Palestinian problem and the future of bilateral relations. Yet no text comprehensively looks at the attitudes and policies of India toward Israel, especially their development in conjunction with history. Kumaraswamy is the first to account for India's Israel policy, revealing surprising inconsistencies in positions taken by the country's leaders, such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, and tracing the crackling tensions between its professed values and realpolitik. Kumaraswamy's findings debunk the belief that India possesses a homogenous policy toward the Middle East.

India , Israel. While such consultations have been routine for the past two decades, the Israeli official chose the direct Air India flight from Tel Aviv — a new flight connection that could only be established due to an unprecedented permit for Israel-bound flights to fly over Saudi airspace. The small incident highlights the distance that India and Israel have traveled since the normalization of diplomatic relations in It was even more clearly visible when PM Modi avoided making any reference in to East Jerusalem being the capital of the future Palestinian state — with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas standing by his side. Under Modi, the Palestinian issue has only been raised in statements during his meetings with leaders of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, but not with other leaders in the Middle East. Along with these developments, India has shifted its diplomatic focus from associations that concentrate on developing countries to the G20 and BRICS nations. It is also giving preference to relations with economically successful states, reversing its previous anti-colonialist stance.

India–Israel relations

India and Israel established full diplomatic relations in and since then the bilateral relationship between the two countries has blossomed at the economic, military, agricultural and political levels. Both countries see themselves as isolated democracies threatened by neighbors that train, finance and encourage terrorism, therefore both countries also view their cooperative relationship as a strategic imperative. Relations between Jerusalem and New Delhi were not always warm. Although both countries gained their independence from the United Kingdom within months of each other, they found themselves headed in pointedly different directions for nearly four decades — India as a leader in the Non-Aligned Movement that maintained close relations to the Arab world and the Soviet Union ; Israel which linked its future to close ties with the United States and Western Europe. India extended de-jure recognition to Israel in and allowed Israel to maintain a consulate in Mumbai Bombay to facilitate the voluntary immigration of thousands of Indian Jews to Israel.

India-Israel relations most notably exemplify realism as cardinal International relations theory wherein the expediency of national interest turns out to be the guiding force behind a nation s foreign policy. Scholars have argued that in the post-cold war era India started following a robust realist foreign policy posture and India s approach towards Israel is a classic affirmation of this stand. During our freedom struggle the top leadership led by Mahatma Gandhi was sympathetic to the Palestine question. During the cold war years India foreign policy was of a moralpolitik and hence India could not appreciate the strategic potential of robust relationship with Israel as it was unable to move beyond the narrow confines of ideological solidarity with the Palestinian cause. However, after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, India emerged as a relatively weaker country as in the cold war era it had the steadfast support of the Soviet Union.
