Four seventh grade science classes were placed into 16 randomized and then heterogeneous and homogenous ability groups and tested after each. The main findings indicate that high ability students may succeed in either ability grouping style.

Within this, policy also highlights that education contributes to developing pupils who are knowledgeable and competent, having high moral standards towards personal well-being, and who are responsible members of their family, society and the nation at large. Additionally, the Malaysian government has consistently initiated and moved to implement efforts to reflect growing global expectations of national educational systems Ministry of Education, A major element of Malaysian Government policy have been statements to reform national education to broaden opportunity towards fostering national unity and to support economic growth.

In England and Wales there is renewed interest in the issue of ability grouping in schools. There is a concern to raise standards, whilst retaining a system of comprehensive schooling. This paper presents results from a project exploring relationships between different types of ability grouping and both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils. The sample comprises all Year 9 pupils aged years in 45 secondary comprehensive schools in England, representing three levels of ability grouping in the lower school Years 7 to 9. Measures of pupil attainment in national tests at the end of primary school Year 6 and at the end of Year 9 are used to indicate academic achievement. All the pupils took tests in English, mathematics and science as part of the national assessment of this year group during the summer term.

The mixed-ability classroom was born from a desire to promote greater equity among students. Too often, tracking and grouping fall along racial and socioeconomic lines , creating disparities between students that exacerbate achievement gaps. The mixed-ability classroom, in theory, creates equal expectations for all students and provides them with the same resources.
