Dewey has been generally recognized as the most renowned and influential American philosopher of education. During his lifetime the United States developed from a simple frontier-agricultural society to a complex urban-industrial nation, and Dewey developed his educational ideas largely in response to this rapid and wrenching period of cultural change. His father, whose ancestors came to America in , was the proprietor of Burlington's general store, and his mother was the daughter of a local judge.
