If I had to choose one over the other Which do you like? Bert Casey? Pete Wernick? Parking lot pickers? Or something else?
They all have their strengths. I think they are called fake books because they only contain the melody notes so you can "fake" a solo at a jam. You can work with the melody and make a break of your own by adding rolls, licks, slides, hammers, etc. I use both Bert Casey and Pete Wernick's books They have words, chords and melody but Bert Casey's is presented in standard musical notation, while Wernick uses tabs to show a basic melody, no notation easy to follow after about 3 minutes of looking at it.
Have seen the Parking Lot Pickers book, it's good too. I'm not sure what you mean when you say some are not as easy to use as others Good Selection too. Melody is in notation but a lot of people only need the included chords.
Paper is thin though and will disintegrate if you spill coffee on it, Trust me. I don't know who to credit it too though. I have the Parking Lot book and technically it's brilliant. The best thing about it is that you get a well done short demo of each song on two CDs included in the book. The only problem I find with the book is that many of the songs aren't all that interesting to me as songs.
But that's just a matter of taste. I have also heard that the term Fake Book came from Jazz musicians. Just as many of us do, they would make handwritten pages in a note book of common songs or ones that they would perform. Many of these tunes were copyrighted, but who cared since these were not real books , but only fake books.
I guess when I said that "some are not as easy to use as others" I had heard some complaints about pete wernicks tabs. Maybe those complaints came from folks looking for complete tabs. I am really trying to get away from tab so maybe I will start with one of the others. I can figure out notation but am pretty slow at it. I am familiar with a good amount of bg standards so I think maybe just having chords and lyrics might force me to work some songs out a little by ear.
I find myself getting sucked into tab but realize that I learn very little about music from it. Well, the cover says it's by one David WIllis. Used to be my home-town organization. My understanding of a "fake book" is more in line with what "jduke" mentioned Mr, "Oblake" do not be put off by the fact the Wernick book has the melodies noted in tab I do not know how to do it, but maybe somebody can post a sample so you can see what it looks like.
I don't think this will suck you into tabs A good fake book minimizes or eliminates the need for page turning by presenting each song on a single page or two-page spread.
They may all do this, as far as I know. I have the "Real" book suggested above. Chose it for the large number of songs and price. Like Philipp, I'm not interested in all the songs in any bluegrass fake book.
So the purchased Real book is the best solution for me. Hal Leonard has bought the rights to all the "Real Books" And paid appropriate royalties where due since when that story was posted.
That is why they are now available at Amazon and other major Distributors. Here's a typical fakebook page:. Thank you for the info. The problem with Wernick is that the type is too small. Readability is key. And also so the whole band can improvise -- or fake -- an arrangement at an actual gig, not just a jam. A fake book is essentially a compilation of "lead sheets" -- written music that contains only the melody line on a staff, chord names or symbols at the appropriate locations, and lyrics.
I just found a sample page from the Bert Casey book and I think that is what I will start with. Does look easily readable and will force me to work on reading notation a little more.
I have been working on learning major scales and I would assume that the simple melody notes provided are right out of the corresponding scale. I want to learn more songs but even more I really want a deeper understanding of what is going on in the song.
I am assuming that is really key to being able to eventually contribute at a jam when I forget the fake book at home. I only have Bert Casey's book and like it. I rarely use it as I much prefer to learn by ear, and just pick up whatever is being played.

The Joy of Fakebooks. Fakebook Review. Bob Keller. I'm writing this note because I love tunes and, in particular, I like reading them in fakebooks. This gives me access to a large set of tunes in a relatively small amount of space.
